  • Shawn Price l Executive Chef
    • (319)200-7111

A native of Cedar Rapids, Shawn Price found his calling to cuisine while an Anthropology student at the University of Iowa.  Between classes, Shawn could be found laboring under the guidance of John Maloney at the legendary State Room in the Iowa Memorial Union.  Drawn to the art and science of the culinary field, Shawn moved to the East Coast to attend culinary school at Johnson and Wales in Rhode Island.  After toiling in front of the open fire rotisserie at Parkside in Providence, he and his wife (Gretchen) moved to New York City where Shawn’s culinary repertoire flourished as a Chef de Partie under Chef Waldy Malouf at Beacon Restaurant.  In 2004 he left Beacon to partner with James George Sarkar to open Venue in Hoboken, New Jersey.  On the cutting edge of the molecular gastronomy movement, Venue appeared in Art Culinaire, a magazine for culinary professionals that profiles the work of leading chefs in the field.

Eager to return to his roots, Shawn returned to Iowa to work with Matt Steigerwald at the Lincoln Cafe.  A local favorite, the Lincoln Cafe was best known for its innovative yet unfussy food that was locally sourced from farmers in the surrounding countryside.  Shawn recalls the kitchen staff would often tease Matt about his habit of buying fresh ingredients from farmers who would show up unannounced at the back door of the restaurant, often requiring them to change the evening’s menu at the last minute.

It was this passion for local, uncomplicated food that encouraged Shawn to leave the Café to pursue his own cuisine, opening Braise in 2009.  Drawing on his past experiences, Braise focused on high quality, personalized menus using local foods.  Shawn has fond memories of working with clients with unusual requests; such as catering a state fair themed wedding on a farm in rural Iowa using two generators that powered the entire property.  Or designing an Indonesian and Chinese menu for a wedding with over 800 guests. Needless to say, Braise grew quickly, catering over fifty weddings the second year.  As Braise continued to grow, so did Shawn’s family.  Shawn’s daughters, Grace and Sophia, could often be found toddling around the restaurant or plastering the office walls with drawings.  In 2014, Shawn decided to close Braise to spend more time with his family.

For the next several years, Shawn sought to explore other aspects of the food service industry.  He helped open the New Pioneer Cooperative in Cedar Rapids, and spent the last several years in the Housing and Dining Department at the University of Iowa, where he led a team of over thirty full time staff and 150 students, to serve over 2600 meals a day to college students living in Hillcrest.

As Executive Chef, Shawn brings his years of culinary expertise to the Cedar Rapids Country Club.  He is excited to return to the kitchen and his passion for high quality, locally sourced dishes providing an unforgettable dining experience for members and guests.
