2019 U.S. SR Women's AM

2019 USGA Senior Women's Amateur - Hosted at CRCC

58TH USGA SENIOR WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Cedar Rapids Country Club is honored to host the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship on August 24-29, 2019, the premier amateur tournament for women golfers age 50 and older. Practice rounds will be held August 22-23.

The USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship was inaugurated in 1962 for women golfers age 50 and older. By the late 1950s, a number of senior women’s golf organizations had been formed, principally to conduct tournaments, but there was no existing tournament to determine the national champion. The USGA was requested to step in, and in January 1962, the Executive Committee approved such a competition.  From 1962-1996, the Senior Women's Amateur was a 54-hole, stroke-play competition. Since 1997, the championship has mirrored all of the other USGA amateur competitions, with 36 holes of on-site qualifying to determine the final 64 players for match play.

      Course Architect

Originally designed by the legendary golf course architect, Donald Ross, in 1915, the golf course at Cedar Rapids Country Club remains the only Ross-designed course in the state of Iowa. After a vigorous research period in 2011, the Club hired the industry-renowned "Ross Restorer" Ron Prichard to lead the re-invigoration and restoration project, which was completed in the Spring of 2016.

      Field

A starting field of 132 players will compete in the 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Orchid Cedar Rapids Country Club. Approximately one month before the start of the championship, sectional qualifying, played over 18 holes, will be conducted at 20+ sites nationwide.

      Eligibility

The championship is open to female amateur golfers who have reached their 50th birthday by the first day of the championship (August 24, 2019) and have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 18.4. The record for entries, 554, was set in 2014.

      Format

The low 64 scorers following stroke play will qualify for match play. If necessary, a playoff will be conducted to determine the final spots in the draw.

Designed in 1915 by the internationally renowned architect Donald Ross, and immaculately restored by famed "Ross Restorer" Ron Prichard beginning in 2011 and completed in the Spring of 2016, the course at Cedar Rapids Country Club has been called one of the prettiest pieces of land in the Midwest. Be forewarned however, that beauty belies a traditional Donald Ross course that will challenge golfers of all ability levels through 18 unique and classic holes.

A straight away Par 4 from a tiered tee complex, the back tees offer a picture-frame view between two signature oak trees common to the Indian Creek valley through which the course winds.  The left side of the fairway offers the safest angle into an elevated and severely sloped green that will challenge the nerves of the best putters.  Beware the front pin position that leaves precious little room to land an approach shot that stays on the green.
